The Four Generations in a work force...and where do I fit in
Recently, we had a seminar on the four generations in work force. I work for a company that has a low turn over rate. When I first started, 7 years ago, about 70% of the people here had been here for 20-30 years already. Many had started and stayed until they were going to retire. So the seminar was important for everyone to learn. This is the just of it, or the four categories that were given to us:
The Matures - born prior to 1946
The Baby Boomers - born between 1946 through 1964
Generation X - born between 1965 through 1980
The Millennials - born 1981 through 1994
All bring with them different perspectives on life and work. The Matures are dedicated to a job once they take it, the Boomers live to work, Generation X work to live, and the Millennials live in the moment. All have great ideas to bring to the workforce and all can benefit the organization, but we have to learn to value the differences and not get caught up in thinking our generation's way is the best way.
So here's my question in all of this jibberish. Where do I fit in? I feel like a zodiac sign that's on the cusp. I'm a gen X/millenial I suppose. But I can relate to the baby boomers and even the matures, because I am an old soul and find old fashioned values refreshing. I'm dedicated to my job as a mother, as a wife, as a friend. I live to work and work to live and sometimes I find myself living in the moment. Can you be all four generations rolled up into one body?
I'm 35 going on 36. I have two teenagers, 16 & 14 and a 7 year old....all girls. I like to bake, cook, read and excerise with my family. We hang out with friends, bbq, bonfire or just lay around and watch movies. I also like to have happy hours, go out and dance on occasion and party it up when the mood hits. I feel awkward at the club because i'm too old, but i'm not ready for the bingo parlor quite yet. I feel so in limbo at my age. As a teen I was unsure of myself, of my body, of my looks. In my twenties I was juggling young motherhood, a crazy relationship and a full time job. Now in my thirties i'm solid, I'm still a tad insecure of my looks and body but i'm at the age it pretty much doesn't matter anymore, and i'm juggling teenagers and a full time job with volunteering in between. I'm still trying to fit in though. Trying to find the nitch as to where I fit in. But when I stopped and I thought about it, I don't want to be in a category. I myself have never fallen under a group or "she's just like so and so" i've always been an individual. I hung out with all crowds from nerds to gangsters and the same applies to my life today. I will never belong in a category, and I dont' think you have to be born in a certain year to be a mature, or a baby boomer or gen x or even a millennial. I think the values you are instilled with is what shapes you into your category. It will be my job to shape my children into bodies who are dedicate, who live to work and are sometimes spontaneous because that is when genious happens.
